The
diamond's name, "Kaşıkçı Elması," is attributed to a popular tale
from the late 17th century. According to this narrative, a poor man scavenging
in Istanbul's Eğrikapı district discovered a shiny stone amidst the refuse. Unaware
of its value, he exchanged it for three wooden spoons with a spoon maker. The
spoon maker, recognizing the stone's potential worth, sold it to a jeweler for
ten akçes (a form of currency). Upon realizing its true value, disputes arose
among the jewelers, eventually reaching the attention of the Chief Jeweler. The
Chief Jeweler presented the diamond to Sultan Mehmed IV, leading to its
incorporation into the imperial treasury.

suggests that the diamond was initially owned by Napoleon Bonaparte's mother. Purchased
in 1774 by a French officer named Pigot from the Maharaja of Madras in India,
the diamond eventually came into the possession of Letizia Ramolino, Napoleon's
mother. Following Napoleon's exile, Letizia sold the diamond, and it was
acquired by Ali Pasha of Tepelena. After Ali Pasha's execution, the diamond was
confiscated and added to the Ottoman imperial treasury
