Old Kalymnos refers to the traditional way of life and the historical roots of the island before it became a popular tourist destination. While the island has modernized in many ways, much of its history and cultural identity are still alive, particularly in certain villages and parts of the island that have maintained the essence of its past. Here are some key aspects of Old Kalymnos:
Traditional Architecture:
- The old villages of Kalymnos, such as Chora, showcase the island's traditional architecture, with narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and charming courtyards. These buildings often feature a mix of local stone and wood, with many houses designed to offer protection against the strong winds that blow through the island.
- Castle of Chora: An important historical site, the Castle of Chora, perched on a hilltop, offers a glimpse into the island's medieval past. It was once the center of defense for the islanders, with its remains still visible today.
Sponge Diving Tradition:
- One of the most iconic aspects of old Kalymnos is its sponge diving heritage. For centuries, Kalymnos was the center of the sponge industry, with divers using hand-harvested sponges for export. The island's history is rich with stories of daring divers who would brave the depths of the sea to harvest sponges. This tradition shaped the island’s economy and culture, and the Sponge Museum on the island preserves this fascinating history.
- The famous Kalymnian sponge divers, known as "spongers," were skilled in free diving, diving to great depths without oxygen tanks, to collect sponges from the sea floor.
Fishing and Maritime Life:
- The island's close relationship with the sea can be seen in its fishing villages, where the main livelihood was once fishing and sailing. The Kalymnian fishing boats (known as "kaikia") were used for both local fishing and for traveling to nearby islands and even to Egypt and Turkey for trade.
- Old Kalymnos also celebrates maritime traditions through festivals and events dedicated to the sea and its importance in the islanders' daily lives.
Cultural Traditions and Folklore:
- Kalymnos has a rich collection of traditional music, dances, and crafts. The island’s folklore is deeply tied to the sea, with many old songs and stories passed down through generations.
- Local festivals, such as the Panagia (Virgin Mary) celebrations, are deeply rooted in Kalymnian culture. During these events, locals celebrate with traditional music, dances, and the offering of food, maintaining a sense of community and cultural continuity.
Traditional Cuisine:
- The cuisine of Old Kalymnos is simple yet delicious, featuring ingredients sourced from the sea and land. Traditional dishes like spaghetti with octopus, lamb with potatoes, and kalymnian stuffed squid showcase the island's focus on fresh, local produce.
- A traditional meze meal is often enjoyed with local wine or raki (a strong anise-flavored drink), emphasizing the importance of family and community in the daily life of the island.
Religious Traditions:
- Religion plays an important role in the daily life of Kalymnos, with many churches and monasteries dotting the island. The Monastery of St. Savvas is an iconic site and has historical significance for the islanders.
- Major religious festivals, such as Easter, are celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion. These celebrations often include processions, special church services, and communal feasts, all of which are rooted in centuries-old traditions.
The Old Kalymnian Way of Life:
- Life in Old Kalymnos was much more focused on self-sufficiency, with families growing their own food, raising livestock, and fishing for sustenance. The island's rural life has preserved a slower, more peaceful pace compared to urban life.
- The island's close-knit communities would gather for various social occasions, helping each other with agricultural tasks, celebrating religious holidays, and passing on local knowledge.
While Old Kalymnos is still visible in its villages, architecture, traditions, and festivals, the island has also embraced modern changes. However, for those who visit the island and explore its hidden gems, the spirit of Old Kalymnos remains a vital part of its charm.
